Smart Meter: Die Zukunft des deutschen Messwesens

Deutschland ersetzt per Gesetz jeden alten Stromzähler durch ein intelligentes Messsystem (iMSys). So funktioniert es.

Was ist ein iMSys?

An intelligent metering system in every home

An iMSys consists of a Smart Meter Gateway (SMGW) and a modern measuring device (mME). The SMGW is the brain — it encrypts data, authenticates market participants, and communicates readings automatically. The mME is a digital meter that counts consumption but has no communication capability on its own.

SMGW (Smart Meter Gateway)

Certified by BSI under TR-03109. Encrypted, authenticated, tamper-resistant. The SMGW is the secure router between your meter and the energy market. It decides who gets which data and when.

mME (moderne Messeinrichtung)

A digital meter that shows consumption on an LCD display but has no communication capability. It just counts. The SMGW connects to it via the LMN and makes it “smart.”

GWA (Gateway Administrator)

The company that remotely manages and updates your SMGW. Usually the MSB. Controls firmware, certificates, reading schedules, and network configuration — all over the WAN.

CLS (Controllable Local System)

Smart home devices the SMGW can control via the HAN: heat pumps, EV chargers, battery storage. Enables demand response — the grid operator can signal the SMGW to reduce load during peak hours.

How leitnetz supports the rollout
leitnetz automates the entire WiM process chain that smart meter installations trigger: Beginn MSB, Ende gMSB, device registration, MSCONS ingestion, and APERAK acknowledgements. When a technician installs a new SMGW, the market communication flows automatically.
