Prozessleitfaden — Bilanzierung

Bilanzierung: Wie die Energiebilanzierung funktioniert

Stromerzeugung und -verbrauch müssen jederzeit im Gleichgewicht sein. Wenn nicht, wird teure Ausgleichsenergie benötigt. So funktioniert es.

Was ist Bilanzierung?

The grid has no memory

Imagine a water pipe with no tank. Water flows in one end and out the other. If more flows in than out, pressure builds and pipes burst. If less flows in, taps run dry. The electricity grid is exactly like this — but at 50 Hz and continent-wide scale. Balance groups are the accounting mechanism that assigns responsibility for keeping that balance.

TSO/ÜNB

Übertragungsnetzbetreiber

Transmission Operator

Operates the high-voltage grid (380/220 kV). Responsible for overall grid stability. Activates reserve capacity when groups go out of balance. There are 4 in Germany.

BKV

Bilanzkreisverantwortlicher

Balance Group Manager

Legally responsible for keeping their balance group in check. Must submit day-ahead schedules and pay for any imbalances. Usually a large LF or trading company.

BKN

Bilanzkreisnehmer

Balance Group Member

Any generator or consumer assigned to a balance group. They do not directly interact with the TSO — their BKV handles that. Their meter data feeds the settlement.

MSB

Messstellenbetreiber

Meter Operator

Reads meters and transmits consumption data via MSCONS. Their data accuracy directly impacts settlement quality. Late data = delayed settlement for the entire chain.

Switch between scenarios to see how a 2 MW deviation in a 15-minute slot turns into a real financial charge for the BKV.

What Powers the System

Day-Ahead Schedules (Fahrpläne)

Every BKV submits a forecast for the next day in 15-minute slots. These schedules set the expectation. The difference between schedule and actual = imbalance = cost.

Reserve Capacity (Regelenergie)

The TSO keeps fast-reacting power plants and battery storage on standby. When a balance group deviates, the TSO activates this reserve. The BKV causing the deviation pays the reserve cost.

Balancing Energy Price (AEP)

The balancing energy price (Ausgleichsenergiepreis) is published daily by each TSO. It varies by interval. During grid stress, it can spike to €2000/MWh — 50x the normal market price.

Intraday Trading Reduces Costs

Smart BKVs trade on the intraday electricity market right up to delivery to correct their position. If they forecast too low, they buy more. This is cheaper than relying on TSO reserve energy.
Why MSB data quality matters so much
Settlement depends entirely on MSCONS meter data. If an MSB sends late readings, the NB cannot pass data to the ÜNB. If an MSB sends wrong readings, the BKV is billed for consumption that did not happen. Every data error in MSCONS is a financial error somewhere in the chain.

Wie leitnetz hilft

Reliable Metering Data, Every Interval

MSCONS Dispatch Tracking

Every MSCONS sent by the MSB is tracked with status: VALIDATED → DISPATCHED → DELIVERED. No message lost, no settlement gap.

Interval Data Management

leitnetz handles 15-minute interval data ingestion, validation, and onward delivery — at the volume of a live energy market.

Error Detection Early

Validation rules catch data anomalies before MSCONS is dispatched. Catching a 0 reading or a meter rollover before it reaches the NB prevents costly settlement corrections.
